1938 World Champion New York Yankees Large Format (19" by 11") Team Signed Photograph From The Johnny Murphy Estate Collection
The 1938 New York Yankees completed the regular season with a record of 99–53, winning their 10th American League pennant, finishing 9.5 games ahead of the Boston Red Sox. Baseball fever burned in the Bronx throughout the season as the Bombers nearly cracked the one million mark in attendance with 970,916 loyal fans filling the seats at Yankee Stadium. Managed by Joe McCarthy, the Yankees beat the Chicago Cubs in four consecutive games in the 1938 Fall Classic, marking the first time any team had ever won three consecutive World Series.
Offered here is a very rare large format (19” wide x 11” high) team-signed black-and-white photo of the ’38 Yankees. A total of 29 team members are featured including Manager Joe McCarthy (center, bottom row). The matted photo demonstrates the highest aesthetic qualities and includes 28 signatures penned in black ink across each of the players’ chests including future Hall of Fame inductees Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Bill Dickey, Red Ruffing and Lefty Gomez. Other esteemed Yankees greats include Babe Dahlgren, Red Rolfe, Tommy Henrich, Spud Chandler, Monte Pearson, George Selkirk and Johnny Murphy. The autograph of Manager Joe McCarthy has been identified as clubhouse. When it came to utter domination, the 1938 Yankees defined the term. Originating from the personal collection of team member Johnny Murphy, this impressive and impeccably preserved signed photo is the ultimate commemoration of that historic squad and signifies the twilight of one Yankee icon’s career (Gehrig) and the emergence of the heir apparent (DiMaggio).
Includes Letter of Provenance from the family of Johnny Murphy. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
